REVOLVE TO SMART WATCHES

I bet most of us, if not all, carry a cell phone around. This gadget has totally revolutionized the world. Imagine the wide array of functions that this small device can do for the busy person. I do have a modest phone which can also tap the Internet, and do the other stuff. I find it very convenient to carry it around. However, as I go through my daily tasks at work, being an instructor in one of the universities here in my city, I find it more comfortable to check on my wrist for the time. Although I tried many times, I still prefer to have a watch around my wrist than to check the time on my phone.

I finally got a smartwatch for my birthday and it is after a long decision making agony. There were so many kinds and styles to choose from and the two things which make this experience more agonizing are when you are choosing between functionality and the price.

With my very own smart watch, I can do just anything in even a smaller device. The best thing about it is that having it strapped around my wrist, there would be lesser chances for it to be swiped away or snatched. Here are some other advantages I get to enjoy with my device:

1. The compact size of my smart watch allows me to work and walk around the classroom platform without any distracting objects in my pockets. I can still be reached and contacted but the freedom of your legs walking around without any big device is just great.

2. I can set numerous time settings for the alarm. In this way, I don't have to worry about overspending time with any of my classes. Some watches can have alarms as well, but the smart watch can have multiple alarms which would be perfect for my job.

3. With the small camera (by the way still has clear images) built-in with smart watches, I would have a discreet way of taking pictures onto anything. There are moments when I needed to have pictures on my demos where I prefer to take images discreetly.

4. The smart watch can still be tapped on the Internet, so besides having calls and SMS on it, one can also surf the web and just do anything like with a regular cell phone. Videos and sounds can still be recorded (depending on the memory capacity of the watch), they can also be zoomed in and out for better viewing.

5. There are some few innovations in a smart watch that would surely make people just have one. Most smart watches have a pedometer which counts the person's steps. For those people who are on close look out for their health, this is a good tool for you. It also has the heart rate meter which can help in checking your heart performance. Some of the more elite smart watches have a tool which would instruct you to move around right after a long sit (let's say from working with your desktop). Other's siri function would just make one's mind be blown away by how much this small device can do.

6. The pairing function of the watch can also enable you to have it tethered with a cell phone. Some smart watches are tethering watches which means they are not supported by their own sim cards. While others are supported and they are called the android watches. An android watch can still be tethered to yet another phone which can make it like a dual sim for those with numerous numbers.

7. Once tethered these smart watches have the finding function which gives you notification and alarm just in case you displaced the watch and use the phone to find it or vice versa.

ATHENA'S TRIP TO LAGUNA

We have been invited by my aunt to a trip to Laguna where my cousin, her son, resides with his family. A week before the schedule, everyone was basically preparing. My younger daughter, Athena, was very excited to go on the trip. Laguna has so many tourists destinations so we decide to make a poll on where the whole gang will visit. Choices were Enchanted Kingdom, Star City, and Splash Island. The winner at the poll was Splash Island!

The trip was set on early 23rd to make it for the house blessing. I know I would be able to finish my tasks on the 22nd. The week before that was the university examination and I needed to check papers and complete grades before I can officially say that my Christmas vacation will start.

However, a few days before driving out of my city, schedule has changed as there would be an international event in the capital and it was expected that this would create traffic. My aunt decided to have the trip earlier on the evening of 21st. There is nothing I can do. I need to finish my tasks because this is work. I have to cancel my slot. My elder daughter changed her mind and has sincerely stayed with me. My younger one was the one who went.

Thanks goodness, they reached the capital safe. They had their rest and started to tour around. The gang went to Fokoda and checked on the dancing fountain at night. Evening is the perfect time to go walking here. With the beautiful lights and the pleasant evening breeze, everyone enjoyed the night!

Although there are also malls in my city, it is a different feeling to walk to malls in another place. It is more on checking the view and making memories. As they wet to check Santa's toy store, they have pictures around toys - children and adults alike.

The main event, what the poll was for, was Splash Island! Everyone was set with their swimming gears although there is a distance to travel. Everyone excited, everyone turned to batwatch characters wearing their rash guards and diving on tubes each! Water slides are all over the place and all one needs to do is jump from the top and experience the splash. It was truly a splash like from its name. All the while, we had the right decision to go with Splash Island as the two other amusement parks were so jam-packed with tourists that most had spent more time queuing than enjoying the rides.

The tourist-packed van finally needs to get back to the city. They had to get home on the 27th, a day before the original schedule of going home. Everyone tired, everyone worn out, but everyone happy. It is pretty obvious with the smiles on their faces.

FRUGAL TIPS THAT CAN SAVE THE DAY

Frugality, at any sense, does not mean tightening one’s belt, and making sacrifices not to do, taste, or experience one or the other. Although at some point it may lead to really having to do some sacrifices, this is where I will be giving you tips to maximize something before throwing it out to the trashcan.

Most people are already well-informed on how they can minimize wasting, and perhaps most of us think that we are doing a great job. However, have you ever thought that maybe you could have something to use for another day before completely agreeing that a product is completely empty.

Let us start with the ones which might be obvious for everyone and check on those which might surprise you.

1. Toothpaste madness. Most people would be using tubes, whatever size they prefer, for their dental care, but are you aware that this product is one of the most wasted. Since there would be more protection using a tube than the sachets, which could not be sealed, everybody might think that they are fully using the toothpaste at the very last drop.

So how do most people maximize toothpaste? While it is up to one’s preference on how to start with it. Probably at the tip or at the middle. Most of us would have the same method of using squeezing out “everything” by pressing the tube flat then pushing more on its sides until all of those left toothpaste come out. While this can do the trick, there is still a part of the tube which most of us ignore. This is the part right before the tube mouth. The plastic used in this part is harder than the rest of the tube primarily because it hols the mouth. Though we can press and squeeze the aluminum-like skin of the tube, we can only push the remaining toothpaste on the mouth and could never really get over the leftover around that area.

So what do we do? Plainly cut the tube wherever you think there would be left toothpaste for a couple of brushing. As frugal as I am, I usually cut toothpaste tubes three times. First at the bottom end where I brush off all the leftovers on the pouch. Next, I would brush off the sides, which were formerly pressed and squeezed, to get totally clean the left paste before I cut it. Then finally, I reach the plastic head and believe me, there would be so much toothpaste that can help you for even more than a day’s brushing.

2. Gooey go go. There are so many products which come in bottles like conditioner, sauce, oil, and the like. Unless these fluids can actually come out of the bottle instantly and altogether, then these products can be squeezed out drop by drop. After using these items normally as you would, at some point when the bottle is almost empty, it would even be harder to squeeze out the goo. Or shall I say, it is hard to use every drop and that leaves some inside the bottle walls and be thrown out. What a waste! What I do when these things are almost empty, I would turn the bottle upside down perhaps a day or an hour before using it. But before doing so, I would make sure that the bottle cap would hold all the left amount of fluid inside. By the time I need to use it, I would just hold the bottle carefully, open the cap, and just use it as a cup for the fluid. A small bottle cap-full of oil may still be of help when frying your lunch and this amount is definitely enough for conditioning your hair.

3. Diluting products. Another way of thoroughly using the contents of bottles is to add water in it. Water washes every single drop of the product in it although there are some fluids which can never be diluted and would have to be worked on like the previous tip. Shampoos, dishwashing liquids and the others can fall under this category. While most people knew and would have been practicing this already, just remember to add a small amount of water in the bottle while rotating it. This way, you will be able to wash off all the fluids on the bottle’s walls.

4. Cut the plastic. Now how about those refills which come in resealable plastics or sachets? Refills usually come in resealable plastics for the purpose of having a temporary container for such products and the same would have to be transferred to bottles once opened. However, transferring them to bottles would just keep some fluids to the walls or sometimes in order to help declutter, most of us prefer to use the refills original container instead. Although it would be easier to take out all the remaining fluid in these kinds of plastics, there is still goo left on the walls and the best way to take it all out to use is to cut the plastic thoroughly. After the plastic container has been totally exposed, it is either you can dilute the fluid with water or you can even wipe the goo right out.

When using free shampoo sachets I get from buying bigger bottles of it, I would always open the whole sachet after removing all the contents. Then brush the plastic on my hair. It always feels better that I have not wasted a drop of free items.

5. Put the kettle back to action. With our advanced times when people feel more convenient using water dispensers for both hot and cold drinks, I do not recommend this for small households. If offices and establishments would have people regularly having a cup of coffee then surely a water dispenser will be good, but for a small household, we don’t have to keep on the power just to keep the hot water boiling. Instead, use a kettle when boiling water then keep it in a thermostat bottle. An efficient bottle can keep the water hot for a day (from morning until afternoon snacks). After it starts to get cold, most of the household will be having dinner and will not be requiring hot water.

How about the old water in the thermostat bottle? Of course, this water has already been a little colder than the newly boiled. I do two things for this. If I will not be using it on anything else, then I reboil this water until it is just right for my coffee, not actually reaching the water’s boiling point anymore. Then if it did not fill the thermostat bottle, that will be the time where I have to boil the next one so that other members of my family would have hot water to use. The other alternative is that, I ask my children to use the old water for washing their faces. It was clean boiled water after all, so instead of heating water from a pot for washing ourselves, we use the old water in the thermostat.

With water scarcity in my city, we cannot afford to use so much water for washing so instead of using those luxurious shower heads in most bathrooms, households do keep a bucket and we limit the use of water for washing.

Have your cooking lined up. I only had come up with this lately that instead of having multiple switching of the stove, how about lining up those things that need to be cooked and have the burner be switched longer. I would usually schedule my cooking so I do not need to waste gas and also exploit my kitchen lighter. So how do I do this? I would have all the scheduled things for cooking lined up. I would first boil water for coffee, then next would be the pot for bathing water. After that then I can place pans or pots for food, and still after everything is done, I would place the pot for dog food. I cook human food leftovers for my pets as an alternate food for their dog food. With my old-fashioned gas range, I keep all my needed utensils on those four burners as if they are in queue. As I always do this when I do not need to rush on things. So while one is getting cooked or boiled, the other three are getting warmed. Then after the first one gets done I place the next without turning off the burner. I just thought that I can keep the burner’s heat and won’t need to have it heated up if I turn off the burner. And keeping the pots together, I believe, when the next pots is placed, the pot is already warmed up which would eliminate the time and gas for the burner to heat up the utensil before it starts heating what is inside.

SLU CE 97 20TH YEAR REUNION

One day last September 2017, a good friend and college mate informed me that there will be a group gathering among my peer mates in college. He asked me to check my schedule and if possible join in the preparation meeting in Pangasinan. I was not able to attend on that day and casually I just informed the guys of my tight schedule. After a few days, the same good friend told me that some of the other friends will be reaching us to prepare for a batch reunion instead. It was surprising as the simple get together had boiled down to a batch event. This time the meeting will be in Baguio City. There wouldn't be any excuse for me not to attend.

The coordinators were delegated on our first meeting. Invite committee, fund raising committee, venue scouting committee and others were formed. Group page and chat were also prepared so those batchmates who are already out of the country will be notified just the same. The group chat is bombarded by so many Hi's and hello's and how are youuuuuus! Everyone got alive and happy. The two months chatting made all the catching up possible for all of us.

December 2018, only a few days before the main event, everyone is prepared, pledges earned and acknowledged, registration and program finalized. The expected 20 participants boomed to 40. The batch president was all smiles knowing that a lot of us are happy to attend.

The 28th at Baguio Palace Hotel, the event is here, SLU CE '97 reunion will take place. A few early birds arrived and the place stayed quiet as if each is still shy. Teh group reached 25 but we kept on waiting for the others to arrive.

Noontime, we decided to have our lunch before proceeding to our program, hoping that the others will arrive soon. So an hour after lunch, the program was pushed. I led the invocation, George P. Vinoya gave a wacky Opening Remarks followed by Cahrlie Maximo's inspiring Welcome Message. Inspirational Messages were also given by Eduardo Crisostomo Jr, and Antonio Abad, the vice president and the president of the executive body. Speeches were full of meaning, enthusiastically driving us to reminisce what we were 20 years ago. As Antonio Abad said, "The reunion is to unite us, the wacky group 20 years ago, and not who are us now." The program continued with the election of the new body of officers where Samuel Ganancial gave his speech as the new batch president. Rommel Joseph Liclican also encouraged everyone as he addressed the solidarity plan.

The program continued with the drawing of raffle winners and distribution of tokens, then the games...
Nino Martinez had the spirit of the group ecstatic as we played butt it pop! Laughter never ceased among the players and the audience as everyone witness how each member of the teams pop the balloons by sitting on those.

The other game was jut thought of by George out of the plan as he asked three men to be blindfolded and do the limbo dance. And as what was expected of him, these guys never crossed the string at all as he gave them a different set of instruction.

With all spirits high, the program concluded and we had freestyle partying. Some sang songs with the band, and other danced all the way.

Most of the songs we remember are from the 90's so I already gave a list of requested songs to the band as a heads up on what they are going to expect from us. "Salamat" was sung by the whole group as well as songs from E-heads. George again unexpectedly sang Abuchikek (even I don't know how to spell it). And amazingly he knew the lyrics as well the every single note of the tune.

Way to go Goryo!

The alloted time at Baguio Palace wasn't enough so we decided to move to another venue and that is for another blog!

HOW TO START ANEW THIS 2018

The holidays are over and time to set up a new you. This could mean working on  another set of New Year's resolution or upgrading your old one; having a total make over of not just yourself but also your lifestyle; and so much more.

I started reviewing my old list of plans, which I had it entitled "10 Year Deadline". This is a list of my things to accomplish at a 10-year period which has dropped down to 9 this 2018. My review came as a motivation (although I take everything as "motivation" nowadays). I didn't make well last year as it was the year of my daughters' graduations (primary and secondary) which means I need to at least give them some presents. One asked for a DLSR and the other required to have another desktop, different from their cash rewards. These presents already cost me the down payment for my supposed to be investment which I also started the same year. Needless to say, I am still down to around three-quarters of all those installments I need to complete in two more years.

From this financial realization, I need to be certain this time that I can focus to those things which need paying. There are no one graduating this year anyway so I can definitely attend to my investments.

These are those things I tried to work on these past few days:

1. LIST DOWN HOW YOU SPEND YOUR MONEY. I usually print a list of things I need to pay per payday. This list would prioritize my daughters' allowance, bills to pay, credit card dues, daughters' braces adjustment, food, and I still get to place 500php to my bank every month. I usually would add the mount to the credit card due when I deposit to the bank. Practically my first half of the month pay will be totally consumed. Nevertheless, I got more freedom budgeting on how much I can pay on my investments on the second half.

2. PRACTICE BULK BUYING. I do practice bulk buying with my kids. This is the day when all of us will walk to the grocery; pick everything we needed for at least 2 months; grab a taxi and done. Our list of groceries includes toiletries to food until snacks like chips and soda. We have one complete door of just junk food in the cupboard. I also would take a few packs of processed food and stock them in the freezer. These are good for rush morning routines when children go to school. My girls don't like to buy lunch so they get theirs packed and their lunch money are saved.

3. STAY FRUGAL. I have so may tips on how to work on your daily expenses and I will be posting it on my next blog. It is not an excuse that the cupboard is overwhelmed with chips that my girls are allowed to eat as often as they want. We usually open one when we have our bonding time as we watch movies at home after the day's work. This is usually over the weekends after we finish our chores.

4. REVIEW WAYS TO CHECK ON WAYS TO EARN INCOME ON THE SIDE. Even as I work on two part time jobs, I still get to check out where I can increase my output especially on free time. Working in the school is indeed time consuming as the job extends to preparing for the lesson and checking cumbersome test papers every now and then. On the other hand my proofreading job is time consuming just the same as one need to sit down and read writing per writing to meet the daily quota.
Anyhow, with all these tasks on hand, one glance at my "10 Year Deadline" will keep me going and looking for more.

My "10 Year Deadline" is posted just on top of my desktop so I can look at it everytime. Those times when I felt tired working, I only raise my head up to ease the tension, and a glance at my list will invigorate me to get back to work. Another tip is to check on videos pushing you to work harder. Youtube has videos from Robert Kiyosaki, Dave Ramsey and the others which are so motivating. As I always advise my girls, "If you are tired working, it is OK to work slow, but never stop."
